I am going to open up the debate of which is needed to become a great artist or designer; talent or education. Many people believe that you have to be talented to be good at either; however there are ways in which people can learn the skills of an artist through education. Which is more important?
Whilst I agree that talent is always essential for an artist or designer, it does not have to be drawing talent – for example it could be visualising characters, making smart designs, wordplay, and so on. Talent makes it easier for people to draw or do other tasks without the need for as much education and they can normally visualise it as they draw.
Most of the top graphic designers went to a top school where they learnt essential design skills. Does this mean that every graphic designer must go to a top school? Of course not…talented artists can learn most of the skills they need themselves, through practice and time. Most people aiming to be a designer have to be shown how to use certain techniques like shading and cross-hatching.
There are some great artists and designers around who have never taken a course or got a qualification in what they do. They are just talented enough to be able to teach themselves. I had a friend who was great at drawing and no matter what angle she drew people at, they were always the perfect ratio. I struggled with knowing how big each person and their body parts should be. Practicing and education solved this problem for me, and now I am a much better artist.
What does this mean? Well of course talent helps in whatever it is that you want to do, but not everyone that wants to be a designer or writer has talent and they have to learn the skills required either by teaching themselves, or through education. Talent may play a huge roll in how successful the artist or designer is but that would be down to their imagination and creativity. There are a few ways that people can learn to be more creative and that is really one of the essential aspects of working in a design or writing environment.
I believe that artists should have some talent to start with because I have seen many design students coming out of a top design school and their work wasn’t that impressive, yet I have also known people with no education draw amazing drawings and create stunning pieces of work. Having a small amount of talent in one area is a great help and then can be built on with education, however fast learners will be fine to just pick their skills up from education and adapt their own style, as long as they are creative and willing to learn. Not everyone can afford to go to a top design school and by no means is it essential – it all depends on how fast the person learns and if they can learn through practice. Every artist develops their own style and therefore people can easily pick their style through practice, rather than education.
