With times changing and new technology becoming more accessible to everyone it is no surprise that the electronic print form is growing. With new technology available for a reasonable price, such as eBook readers and other portable devices it is now easier than ever for people to read the daily news and magazine subscriptions on the go. There are many reasons why a lot of people now prefer reading in the electronic format and three of the main reasons will be examined below.
- Cost – It is generally much cheaper to catch up on the latest news or gossip online or by virtual subscriptions as there are no printing fees to be paid. The internet is a huge resource and you can easily find a dedicated website for news, sport, weather and almost anything that you could imagine. Newspapers such as the ‘The Sun’ have a free website which allows anyone to access each of the stories which are printed in their traditional paper, as well as additional stories and headlines which didn’t make it into the print version. A lot of people will refuse to pay for something that they can find for free, and in today’s economical situation it is easy to see why.
- Flexibility – Reading the news electronically provides you with much more flexibility as you can read it on a computer, mobile, PDA, eBook reader, laptop, netbook and so on; whereas a traditional paper must be carried with you in order to read, unless you plan on buying multiple copies. The wide range of devices which can now read the news electronically make it easier than ever for people to share news with their friends, family or co-workers via email or social networking websites such as Twitter. Many of these devices also provide the reader with an option to change the font or increase the font size to suit their reading style and eyesight.
- Archive – With a traditional newspaper you can only archive or keep older news if you plan on keeping the whole, or parts, of the newspaper itself. This option doesn’t appeal to a lot of people as storing old news papers takes space and you then have to search through each newspaper to find the article that you were looking for. Electronic files can be stored on multiple devices as well as Micro and Standard SD cards; meaning that electronic files are much easier to archive and organise, without taking up any psychical space. On top of this electronic files also allow you to enter a search term or phrase and you will then see that specific word or phrase highlighted throughout the article, making it much easier to find the information that you are looking for.
Overall there are many advantages to reading the daily news in an electronic format and it provides the reader with much more flexibility on when and where they read. Being able to increase the font size in electronic files is a great benefit to people with poor eyesight, or the elderly who may not be able to read the small traditional print size. Whilst the electronic revolution may not be completely ready, it is more than suitable for reading the daily news and will help keep people connected and in touch with the world’s issues without sacrificing any of the Earth’s resources, such as a trees.
